Frequently asked questions

Access to rooms is controlled with key cards which need to be picked up at the University Centre Serivece Desk during office hours before rental period starts.

  • If guests are unable to pick keys up during office hours (mon - thu 8:30 - 4 pm, fri 8:30 - 3pm) it is their UI contacts responsibility to pick up the keys and hand over to the guests on arrival.

Access to the building is granted with a code which is emailed to guests/contacts before arrival.

  • The code is for a key lock box next to the entrance to the stairwell and elevators and needs to be closed and locked after each use.
  • For those who are unfamiliar with a key lock box it is a small safety box on the wall next to the door with a black plastic cover that needs to be opened to enter the code.
  • This part is a temporary solution for a temporary door due to be replaced soon

Guests who are paying themselves can pay at the University Centre Service Desk during their stay.

UI project numbers are charged once a month via accounting.

If an institute outside of the University would like to pay for the accommodation you can send information to gestaibudir@hi.is including the following:

  • full name of payer
  • Icelandic national ID number (kennitala) if applicable
  • mailing address
  • the email address the invoice should be sent to
  • other information you would like specified on the invoice

All the rooms are located on the 3rd floor of Saga's north wing.

All rooms can have a maximum of two guests and have a private bathroom and small refrigerator. Six rooms have a kitchenette and a possibility of a connected room.

There is a shared kitchen on the floor as well as a laundry room. In the laundry you have access to a washer, dryer, an iron and ironing board among other useful things.

Free wi-fi is included but routers are still being set up in some rooms - but there is a router in the shared kitchen (room 351) which anyone can use.

The SSID and password is written on the router in your room. If there is no router in the room and you cannot get a signal from the router in the shared kitchen you can email gestaibudir@hi.is and request the SSID and password for the router located closest to your room.

Due to the buildings history, most people familiar with it associate it to the hotel industry. We do try to offer many comforts for our guests, but the nature of the accommodation bears more resemblance with subletting a furnished apartment. Guests clean their own rooms during the stay and have access to a kitchen and laundry for every day needs. If a guest is locked out they themselves have to contact the appropriate authorities and if applicable pay for emergency assistance (from Öryggismiðstöðin). Phonenumbers and other necessary information is sent via email to guests/contacts before arrival.

Guests are asked to leave their keycards in a return box on the 3rd floor

If a guest has handed their key over to their UI contact after departure we ask that the contact return the key as soon as possible to the University Centre Service Desk.

All employees of the University of Iceland can book rooms at Saga but always need to specify a university email address ([at]hi.is) and a project number.

The rooms are intended as accommodation for visiting scholars colaborating with the university locally for a short period.

The guests connection to the University does not need to be explained upon booking. The person booking just needs to state their university email address and the project number responsible for the guests visit.

The contact person (the employee booking the room) needs to make sure the guest recieves all necessary information as well as, in some cases, collecting keys and getting them to the guests on arrival. If a guest leaves without payment or cancels with less than 7 days notice the guest accommodation will contact the employee who booked the room.

Intstitutes outside the University that were allowed use of our accommodation before moving to Saga maintain that right but are asked to specify a national ID number (kennitala) instead of a project number when booking.
